READ: Proverbs 15 (Focus vs. 1-6)
MEMORY VERSE
“A gentle answer turns away wrath.” Proverbs 15:1
BACKGROUND
“Close it up. I’ve seen enough.” Those were the words of an older, experienced beekeeper to me one afternoon when I was learning how to tend a hive.
My movements had been quick and forceful, causing vibrations that alarmed the bees and resulted in a growing swarm around my head. Even though I was trying to care for them, I was only making them angry.
My friend proceeded to show me the importance of moving “softly,” using gentle motions that were less likely to disturb the bees. Today (years later), when I go into a hive, my motions are so much smoother that my wife tells me it almost looks like I’m dancing.
Sometimes difficult conversations are like dancing with bees. When others are upset and emotions are tense, reacting angrily only makes matters worse. As King Solomon observed, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1).
Responding kindly and peacefully to those who are irritated or unreasonable may take time to learn. But because gentleness is a fruit of the Holy Spirit at work within us (see Galatians 5:22-23), with God’s help we can make progress in it.
These days I’m learning to pray for wisdom and gentleness whenever I go into a hive or a difficult conversation. When we walk with God into tense moments, our “help in trouble” is never far away (Psalm 46:1).

INSIGHT
Wisdom is one of the great themes of the Bible. In fact, in Old Testament wisdom literature, poetry is designed to show the difference between wisdom and folly. This is often done through the poetic device of parallelism.
In antithetical parallelism, a verse will contain two lines that contrast with one another, as seen in Proverbs 15:1: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
This device is found throughout Proverbs and Ecclesiastes and makes a vivid case for living a life of wisdom in a world wracked by foolishness. The book of Proverbs offers practical advice for how to use our words wisely.
We can ask God for wisdom when we don’t know how to respond in difficult situations. In the New Testament, James tells us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (1:5).

TODAY’S HYMN/WORSHIP/PRAISE/GOSPEL SONG
“A GENTLE ANSWER” Way to the Father
Not every road will lead me nearer
Not every light belongs to dawn
Some paths can shine with borrowed beauty
And still leave life already gone
So teach me Father how to answer
When anger rises in my chest
Not with the fire of wounded pride
But with the peace that knows You best
There is a way that seems so right
And still can lead the soul to death
The simple heart believes too quickly
The prudent watches every step
The wise man fears You and departs
From every road that pulls to harm
But fools rush on in heated fury
Trusting only their own storm
A quick-tempered heart works folly
Pride can strike with heavy hand
But wisdom teaches gentler speaking
That helps a life to rise and stand
Not every strength is loud and forceful
Not every truth arrives severe
For where a gentle heart is waking
Your wiser voice is drawing near
A gentle answer comes from You Lord
When the heart is armed for war
You teach me how to answer differently
So peace can stay where hurt was born
A gentle answer comes from You Lord
And guards life deep within again
For a sound heart is life unto the body
And Your peace keeps lifting me
Behind a laugh there still may linger
An ache no passing eye has known
And even joy can hide a sorrow
Beneath a bright and practiced tone
But in the fear of God is refuge
A place of strength for sons and daughters
The fear of God becomes a fountain
That turns the soul away from slaughter
A sound heart brings life to the body
While envy rots the bones within
So keep me from the path of seeming
And teach me mercy when I speak
Keep me from the road of appearance
That shines and still can wound and kill
And teach me how to answer softly
So that Your peace would rise above
Give me patience before speaking
And quick ears when I should hear
Let not emotion be my master
But holy wisdom drawing near
Do not let me trust each passing voice Lord
Or run toward what deceives
But let the fear of God still guard me
When many roads begin to speak
Put in me a gentle strength now
Not weak but bowed to only You
For where You reign within a people
Wells of life begin anew
A gentle answer comes from You Lord
When the heart is armed for war
You teach me how to answer differently
So peace can stay where hurt was born
A gentle answer comes from You Lord
And guards life deep within again
For a sound heart is life unto the body
And Your peace keeps lifting me
A gentle answer
Comes from You Lord
A sound heart lives before You
And Your peace keeps me
